Vande Mataram Meaning
History of the song
The song Vande Mataram is written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in praise of Mother India. The first two lines of ‘Vande Mataram’ were adopted by the Constituent Assembly of India in 1950 as the lyrics of the national song of India.
The original version of Vande Mataram was written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay/Chatterjee.
Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay had a keen interest in events in Indian and Bengali history, especially the Revolt of 1857 and the Sanyasi Rebellion, which had occurred a century earlier. During his tenure as a government official in 1876, the colonial administration was trying to promote “God Save the Queen” as the national anthem of British India.
Needless to say, the vast majority of Indian nationalists were against such a move. Thus, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay wrote a poem that would retain the original identity of India and incorporate its rich cultural history.
Chattopadhyay wrote Vande Mataram in one spontaneous session using words from Sanskrit and Bengali, although Vande Mataram is mainly written in Sanskrit but some words are also from Bengali. Vande Mataram was published in 1882 in Chattopadhyay’s book Anandamath (pronounced Anandomoh in Bengali. ), which is based on the events of the Sanyasi Rebellion.
Soon after Vande Mataram was written, Jadunath Bhattacharya was asked to compose its tune.
The modern Vande Mataram composition, as heard today, is attributed to V. D. Paluskar, the founder of Gandharva Mahavidyalaya and All India Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal.
